Wearing his influences on his sleeve never did Noel Gallagher any harm, and so it would be churlish to dismiss Snow Patrol for the huge debt they owe to such US noiseniks as Sonic Youth, Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. At least they remembered to write some songs. Despite the swathes of noise there’s a pleasing pop sensibility here: ‘Ask Me How I Am’ has the flavour of a grungy Gomez while ‘One Night Is Not Enough’ is positively anthemic. Artsier moments like ‘Black and Blue’ and ‘An Olive Grove Facing The Sea’ are equally endearing for all their backward rhythms and widescreen trippiness. Not original…but still pretty special. 4/5
