The Daily Express – Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant
02nd June 2000
Record Review

It’s better if you know nothing about Belle & Sebastian… This is quite singular music. Delicate and dreamy, pristine and yet emotional, it takes the perfect pop sensibility of a Burt Bacharach and mixes it with the style of one of those Sixties string-driven things like Quintessence. Proper instruments abound – violins, harpsichords, cellos, acoustic guitars, horns – and, when required to, sit comfortably with electric pianos. Stuart Murdoch’s clean and precise vocals suit it perfectly…Murdoch sounds detached but in control. Take away the baggage and take away the preconceptions and what you’re left with is a quite lovely record. 4/5
